The opportunity to invest in high growth companies is often only available to business founders, business angels and institutions. Offering shares to private investors prior to being quoted allows investors to benefit from any uplift in value when the shares are quoted. In addition, when purchasing shares in quoted companies there is usually a restriction in the number of shares that can be purchased, this can be coupled with dealing costs and onerous share spreads between the buy and sell price. None of these costs/restrictions are present when purchasing equity on a pre-IPO basis.
